Redefining Origin: Brand Catalyser x MIA Relaunching New Zealand Red Meat in China
Introduction: A Milestone Event with Global Significance
Brand Catalyser was appointed as the lead strategic and executional partner for the New Zealand Red Meat Country of Origin Brand Relaunch Ceremony, a pivotal event that took place in Shanghai during the official China visit of Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon. The ceremony marked the official relaunch of New Zealand’s red meat country of origin brand, backed by government and industry leaders.
With over 100 key stakeholders in attendance, including government officials, exporters, and Chinese trade partners, the event served both symbolic and strategic functions - reinforcing trust in New Zealand's premium agricultural exports, and resetting the tone for red meat communications in the China market.
BC’s Role: Strategic Leadership from Start to Finish
As the agency appointed to lead the full scope of the project, Brand Catalyser’s responsibilities extended across strategy, branding, content, stakeholder management, and on-ground execution. Our team worked together with MIA leadership, NZTE, and other stakeholders to ensure every element was coherent, compliant, and compelling.
Strategic Brand Positioning:
We were tasked with rearticulating the red meat origin brand in a way that balances government-backed credibility with local cultural resonance.
Cross-cultural Narrative Development:
BC crafted bilingual storytelling that aligns with New Zealand’s national interests while appealing to trade and consumer-level Chinese audiences.
Multimedia Content Production:
Our team created all bilingual copy, print materials, digital visuals, and on-site signage, ensuring consistency and clarity throughout.
Event Creative Direction:
BC designed all visual assets, from event look-and-feel to branded stage backdrops, ceremonial items, and presentation slides.
Stakeholder Alignment:
We navigated a highly complex stakeholder matrix across government, exporters, marketing bodies, and diplomatic teams.
On-Site Execution & Stage Management:
Our team oversaw event logistics, speaker prep, live scripting, and seamless flow of a politically sensitive program. Our team conducted over ten full technical and protocol rehearsals to ensure everything was ready for top-level participation.
The Challenge: A High-Stakes, Multi-Layered Brief
The significance of the event — involving a head of state, multiple trade delegations, and China-based partners — meant that no detail could be left unconsidered. BC’s greatest challenge was balancing three critical tensions:
Formality vs. Accessibility: Maintaining a tone that reflects the gravity of a Prime Ministerial visit, while still being engaging and market friendly.
Global vs. Local: Respecting New Zealand's brand values while adapting messaging, visuals, and ceremony structure to resonate with Chinese culture and business etiquette.
Multiple Stakeholders, One Narrative: Aligning the priorities and expectations of diverse stakeholders, including government offices, MIA leadership, exporter brands, and China-based importers, all while ensuring the message was unified and compelling.
How We Solved It: Precision, Preparation & Partnership
To navigate this complexity, BC anchored the project around four core principles:
Clarity in Messaging: We developed a clear, values-driven narrative that was shared and approved across all parties early on. Every visual and verbal element was aligned to this core story.
Cross-Cultural Fluency: We ensured all assets - from the ceremony script to backdrop language hierarchy - reflected cultural nuances and avoided potential risks in tone or symbolism.
Rigorous Planning: From vendor management to run-of-show documents, BC treated every moving part with precision. We even created custom walkthrough documents for VIP attendees.
Team Integration: We operated as a seamless extension of the MIA and NZTE teams, with daily check-ins, live editing rounds, and rapid approvals across time zones.
Impact: A Seamless Launch, A Strong Foundation
The event was executed flawlessly, with high praise from attending officials and trade partners. Prime Minister Luxon, MIA Chair Nathan Guy, and MIA CEO Sirma Karapeeva each delivered remarks that reflected the new brand narrative, supported by BC’s behind-the-scenes efforts and staging support.
At the event, we saw:
• 100+ high-value guests across government, industry, and media
• Zero delays or execution errors despite a multi-tiered protocol structure
• Consistent brand alignment across all speeches, signage, and visuals
• Reinforced NZ premium positioning among Chinese trade stakeholders
• Increased internal alignment between MIA, exporters, and NZTE on next-phase communications in-market
